Naussac and his water level

Naussac is an artificial lake of 1090 ha, creates to control the course of the Loire river, in order to guarantee a
certain volume of water on this river which has a certain number of nuclear thermal power stations and which use this water for the cooling of their engines.

For a few years, the construction called ' Naussac II' has been born.

It is acted in fact of a mini dam, located in a foot of the actual main dam, and which makes it possible to pump water from Allier river to fill Naussac in winter. The pumps are also used as generators in summer and produce electricity when the lake is emptied. The filling of the lake is done by natural contributions of brooks, but also by derivation of Chapeauroux river. According to the spring and summer pluviometry, the volumes of water released by Naussac oscillate between 1 and 15m3/second. But in year exceptional as in 2003, these released can await 20m3/sec over a few days.

The volume of the lake at its maximum level is 190 million m3, which give a few weeks before feeling a real modification of the landscape and accesses of the water level. At the beginning of season (May) the lake is full, and the borders are field without beach, whereas in August, one has a edge of beach between 20 to 100m according to the summers.
